Thursday, May 22 - Art Cubed: Black and White

This Thursday, May 22 at the Cube Gallery at 7 Hamilton Ave N, Ottawa (close to Parkdale Market), IJO musicians Mike Tremblay (woodwinds) and Adrian Cho (double bass) will perform with dancer and choreographer Mary Catherine Jack.  MC and I are frequent collaborators and as many of you will know, she was the choreographic force behind the IJO’s 2007 Christmas spectacular, The Canuckracker.

The Art Cubed performances blend multiple artistic disciplines. Inspired by the Cube Gallery’s “Black and White” exhibit, this Thursday’s performance will feature improvised music, dance, a little bit of theatre, and film by Ottawa director Stephen DeFilipi.

The performance begins at 8 PM and admission is $20 or $15 each for groups of three or more people.

Hope to see you there.

Cheers

Adrian

Summer update from the IJO

Greetings

I hope this update finds you in good health and spirits. A few updates from the IJO:

1) A trio of IJO musicians (Mike Tremblay on sax, Peter Foret on guitar, and Adrian Cho on bass) will be performing at a Fundraising Dinner for the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church on May 24 at 5:30 PM. Mount Calvary has been a big supporter of the IJO and provides us with rehearsal space amongst other things. The dinner will take place in the lower level of the church which is located at 933 Smyth Rd, Ottawa. Only $12 per plate. If you’d like to attend, please RSVP to pastor@mountcalvaryottawa.org.

2) The IJO’s appearance at Billings Estate Museum has been changed from June 4 to June 18. We’ll be performing 100 years of music from 1850 - 1950 with a full band and the dancers from Swing Dynamite. If you’re familiar with jazz history you will have already worked out that 1850 is a good 60 or so years before “jazz” really came into being. So what we will play from the late 19th century? Come along and find out! Concert begins at 8 PM. We don’t know the exact price of tickets yet but I’m sure it will be very affordable as it was last year. This is an outdoor concert.

3) Our appearance on the main stage at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival takes place on June 30. For $30 (or one of the festival passes) you can get entry into the park and listen to Naturally Seven followed by the IJO and then Gladys Knight. The IJO’s concert, featuring a 22-piece orchestra performing a tribute to Stan Kenton, will begin at 6 PM. This is an outdoor concert.

4) On August 10 the IJO will perform an eclectic repertoire of music from the 1920s to the 1950s at Mackenzie King Estate in Gatineau Park. This is a free concert beginning at 1:30 PM. A great family event. This is an outdoor concert.

5) And now a sneak peak at our yet-to-be-announced 2008-2009 season. The first concert of the season will see the IJO back at the NAC Fourth Stage. On September 19, six musicians from the IJO and a number of special guests will perform in an evening of contemporary compositions and freely improvised chamber jazz. The cool thing about this event is that audience participation will feature throughout the evening. In other words, the audience will get to influence the music. It should be a fun event. The show will be called “Whose Solo Is It Anyway?” ;) And people thought that the IJO only performed repertory jazz…

And more great events coming in the year and season ahead. I hope to see you at one of these or another forthcoming IJO event.

Enjoy the summer.

Cheers

Adrian

Jazz Vespers

This Sunday, April 27, the Impressions in Jazz Orchestra and Mount Calvary Lutheran Church will once again present a service of jazz vespers.  Our first jazz vespers presented in October 2007 was a great success and this next event is sure to be just as exciting and moving.

Musicians from the IJO will perform jazz arrangements of sacred tunes as well as some great music from Charles Mingus and John Coltrane.  Pastor Deborah Taylor will give a short jazz-themed sermon.  Appearing from the IJO will be Rick Rangno (trumpet), James O’Farrell (tenor sax, clarinet, voice), Steve Berndt (trombone), Mike Manny (piano), Adrian Cho (double bass & arrangements) and Mark Rehder (drums).

Service begins at 7 PM at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 933 Smyth Rd.  There’s no admission fee and there’ll even be food and drinks provided after the service.

Hope to see you there.

Cult Fiction Classics quiz answers

At the IJO’s Cult Fiction Classics concert on April 18, 2008, a pop culture quiz was conducted with guest MC, Laurence Wall. IJO artistic and promotional partners, A Company of Fools, Ottawa Baroque Consort, St. Lawrence Shakepeare, CD Warehouse, and Benitz Bistro generously donated fabulous prizes including tickets, season passes, jazz DVDs and CDs, and dinner for two. First‐prize winner, John Haysom, answered 10 questions correctly!

The quiz answers have been posted on the IJO web site. Click here to download the quiz in PDF format.

The IJO would like to once again thank the above organisations for their generous support.

One point of errata from the programme notes (if you can call them that considering how short they were compared to typical IJO programme notes). The listing of musicians stated that there were nineteen musicians but only eighteen were listed. Due to a formatting error, percussionist Tavis Hayes’ name did not appear. Tavis’ appearance is noteworthy as he is a student at École Secondaire Béatrice-Desloges. This is the first time the IJO has included such a young artist in the ensemble. Tavis’ performance was exemplary and you will be seeing more of him and other developing artists at future IJO performances.

Thank you to everyone who attend the concert.  It’s fair to say that a great time was had by all.  See you soon at another IJO event!

An update from the Impressions in Jazz Orchestra

In 2007 the IJO presented an astounding nine events. We premiered four seminal extended works (Ellington’s Shakespearean suite, Such Suite Thunder, the Sketches of Spain and Miles Ahead suites that Gil Evans wrote for Miles Davis, and Ellington’s Nutcracker suite) and countless shorter pieces of music.

As it’s been over three months since our last event, it’s understandable why some people might be wondering what’s next for Ottawa’s premiere jazz orchestra.

We have not been idle by any measure. We just released details of our season finale which will take place in a little over two weeks from now. With the help of a number of very generous promotional and artistic partners, we’ve packaged great music, food, and the chance to win some pretty cool prizes. This is sure to be a really fun event and I encourage you to attend and to tell everyone you know about it.

On April 27th, a sextet of IJO musicians will participate in a jazz vespers service at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. Our most recent jazz vespers in October last year was a huge hit and this one promises to be even better.

On June 4th, the orchestra is back at the Billings Estate Museum. Proving once again that our musicians can perform any style of music and that jazz is a genre of great breadth and depth, we’ll be performing music from as far back as the 1850s. With the help of the Swing Dynamite dancers, we’ll explore the integration of African and European culture that led to the development of jazz and we’ll track its evolution over 100 years.

On June 30th, the orchestra is back at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival. After critically acclaimed performances in the Connoisseur Series at the National Library in 2005 and the Studio Series at the NAC Studio in 2006, our appearance at 2008 will be in the Great Canadian Jazz series on the main stage in Confederation Park. We’ll be performing a tribute to Stan Kenton and what a show it promises to be.

There are even more events planned for the summer and you’ll be hearing about them as they are confirmed and announced. In due course we’ll also announce a whole new season of events beginning in the fall.

As a special gesture to our supporters, we’re extending any soon-to-expire supporter terms until April 19th, thereby ensuring that those people receive their benefits at our season finale.

I hope to see you on April 18th.

Cheers

Adrian

The IJO performs the music of pop culture from stage and screen

On April 18, 2008, the IJO will present its season finale at Dominion-Chalmers United Church, 355 Cooper Street. Cult Fiction Classics will feature hip musical themes from sci-fi, crime show classics and spy thrillers of yesteryear, a rare performance of the explosive West Side Story Medley (written for the Buddy Rich band), and a Canadian premiere performance of Johnny Richards’ brilliant arrangements for the album My Fair Lady – My Way. CBC Radio newsreader Laurence Wall will appear as guest MC and pop culture quizmaster as audience members compete for a host of prizes donated by promotional and artistic partners Benitz Bistro, CD Warehouse, A Company of Fools, the St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival and the Ottawa Baroque Consort. The IJO’s Artistic Director, Adrian Cho, recently discovered Richards’ handwritten scores of My Fair Lady in New York and has worked with IJO musicians Rick Rangno (trumpet), Cathy Hammond (woodwinds) and Mike Manny (piano) to recreate the music for what may be its first live performance since it was recorded almost fifty years ago.

Concert goers are invited to take advantage of special pre-show dinner and post-show dessert and coffee packages offered by Benitz Bistro, featuring the culinary talent of Ottawa Restaurant Awards 2008 Chef of the Year, Derek Benitz. The restaurant, located at 327 Somerset Street West, is just one block from the concert venue, providing a convenient opportunity to sample both great food and great music. A special IJO Table d’hôte is priced at just $38 and is available Monday to Thursday beginning April 3rd and on the day of concert when the restaurant will open at 5 PM especially for IJO patrons.

Tickets for Cult Fiction Classics are priced at just $25 for adults and $15 for students and are available online now at TicketWeb.ca and at Compact Music in the Glebe and all three CD Warehouse locations beginning April 3rd. THE GENIUS OF GIL EVANS - A tribute to one of the greatest jazz composers

On Tuesday, October 2, 2007, the Impressions in Jazz Orchestra will present the long-awaited sequel to “The Magic of Miles Davis” which was presented by orchestra founder Adrian Cho in early 2005. In planning and preparation since 2004, “The Genius of Gil Evans” will pay tribute to one of the greatest jazz composers with a programme of some of the most famous music in the symphonic jazz repertoire.

This concert featuring the IJO’s neophonic orchestra and Toronto trumpet soloist Lina Allemano, has been highly anticipated by fans of Gil Evans and Miles Davis and is now less than one month away. The programme will include performances of “Sketches of Spain” and “Miles Ahead,” two of the famous suites that the Toronto-born Evans made famous with Davis in 1957 and 1960. Also on the programme are works composed by Evans for his own orchestra and the Claude Thornhill Orchestra.

The IJO’s neophonic orchestra conducted by IJO Artistic Director, Adrian Cho, features twenty-five of Ottawa’s finest jazz and symphony orchestra musicians. The diverse instrumentation reflects Evans’ love of timbres and orchestral textures and includes oboe, English horn, bassoon, harp, French horns, tuba and symphonic percussion in addition to the usual jazz orchestra instrumentation. A sizable contribution to the diverse sound palette will come from the IJO’s saxophone section with five musicians playing twenty-five woodwind instruments!

Like many great jazz composers, Evans was deeply influenced by other musical styles. In addition to drawing on the work of fellow jazz composers, his music incorporated musical material from the likes of Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Leo Delibe, Alban Berg, Manuel de Falla and Joaquin Rodrigo.

The performance of “Sketches of Spain” will feature each member of the IJO trumpet section soloing on one movement. Rick Rangno who has held the IJO solo trumpet chair since the ensemble’s inception, will perform the famous “Concierto de Aranjuez” and John Merritt, Jean Trudel, Mark Bailey and Frederic Paci will perform the other four movements of the suite.

Allemano who was recently listed in Downbeat magazine as one of 25 trumpeters to watch for in the future, will play the solo trumpet parts for a number of works including all ten movements of “Miles Ahead.” When Allemano performed a preview of this concert at the IJO’s “Overture” season opener in March, her performances were highly praised for their depth and soulfulness and audiences are eagerly awaiting her return to the IJO stage.

“The Genius of Gil Evans” will be presented in the International Ballroom at the Crowne Plaza Ottawa hotel. Tickets are priced at $30 for Adults and $20 for Seniors/Students and are now available online at TicketWeb. Tickets will also be available soon (estimated September 6, 2007) from CD Warehouse (3 locations), Compact Music (2 locations) and the Crowne Plaza sales office (M-F, 9 -5). For further details including information about a pre-concert dining package, visit the IJO’s website at http://www.impressionsinjazz.ca/CP-021007.html.
